Stencil T-shirts

YOUR OWN T-SHIRT!

We're gonna make a cool stencil shirt using spray paint!

Don't miss out!

EVER WANTED TO MAKE YOUR OWN SHIRTS?

HELPFUL HINTS

Before we get started please read these important suggestions...

Wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

As you will see in upcoming slides, your fingers will get covered in paint. If you want to prevent this, you can wear gloves.

It is a health risk to use spray paint due to the toxic fumes. Please take the necessary precautions. Wear a mask and make sure there is some ventilation in the room.

Take your time. Don't hold the spray can too close to the target. You want the paint to be evenly coated.

Please keep spray paint out of reach of children. I learned this by experience. Once they find it, you will see a change in color on walls, sidewalks, and trees.

SET UP

You'll need a flat surface that you can easily work on. I recommend covering it with newspaper. I am using a covered ironing board. It's perfect to fit clothing on, and it's at a great height.

I have here a variety of colored spray paint. Hey, it's YOUR design...you choose the colors YOU want!

You'll also need:

1. X-acto knife

2. Cardstock paper or other thick paper

3. Cutting board

4. Packing tape

5. Double-sided tape

Gather some blank t-shirts to paint on! You can buy new ones or just use a shirt you might wanna spice up with your new design!

PLAN YOUR DESIGN!

This is your time to be creative! Let's get started!

You have a couple options:

You can either print out a picture from your computer or you can draw your own.

If you print out the design, I recommend making it high contrast and printing in black and white. It will make it easier to see the lines you want to cut.

Or, you can draw out your design on the cardstock paper.

Keep in mind it may be easier to spray paint straight edges compared to ridgid, small designs.

Remember: whatever you cut OUT is what SHOWS on your shirt.

MAKING YOUR STENCIL

Using your x-acto knife, cut along the lines to create your stencil. Remember that whatever you cut OUT is what will SHOW on your shirt.

GET YOUR SHIRT READY FOR PRINTING

Place your shirt flat on your surface. Tape it down with the packing tape so the shirt doesn't move around. Also, tape newspaper on top of the shirt where no painting will be done. You don't want spray paint in unwanted places. Just make sure you have something like newspaper or cardboard inbetween the front and back of your shirt. The spray paint might go through the material.

The tape will not leave a residue on your shirt. It should come off clean and easy.

You can print ANYWHERE on your shirt! Be creative!

Using the double-sided tape, go around the back of the stencil going right along the edges of the design. This way, no paint will spray under the stencil, bleeding the design.

After applying the double-sided tape, stick the stencil at your desired position on your shirt.

If you have multiple stencils, you will need to spray one at a time.

APPLYING YOUR STENCIL

DO YOUR THANG!

Now the party can start! Evenly spray the paint on your shirt. You can carefully hold down the stencil as you spray to have a more defined edge.

CHECK IT OUT!

After you're all done spraying, peel off the tape and remove newspaper. The paint may still be wet, so be careful.

Your design is complete!

Here are a few other samples I have made.

Have fun putting your own ideas into action! Make your wardrobe stylish and best of all: YOUR OWN.
