Safety in the Technology Classroom.

GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR TECHNOLOGY EXPLORATION

1. Each student must consider it their duty to protect themselves and their classmates from accidents.

2. Report all injuries, no matter how small, to the Instructor immediately.

3. Wear either safety glasses or a face shield when engaged in any activity where eye hazards may exist.

4. Be sure clothes are safe and suitable for shop work. Remove or fasten any loose clothing. Roll loose sleeves above the elbows. Keep hair away from equipment.

5. Only one person may be at a machine at a time.

6. Report to your instructor any equipment or tools that do not seem to be in proper working condition.

7. Keep floors and pathways clear of scraps, litter and backpacks.

8. Don't play with vises.

9. Know fire procedures.

10. No Running, scuffling, and horseplay.

11. No student is to start or stop a machine for another student.

12. Do not distract or startle the operator of any machine.

Starting with hand tools students need to be aware of the dangers of using sharp tools. Some of the basic tools are scissors, pencils, rulers and compasses. We will also be using many hand and power tools. When working in the shop students must always wear safety glasses.

The Drillpress is one of the most versatile tools in the shop. We use it to drill holes in metal and wood. We also use the Drillpress as a drum sander.

  • Power tools can be very safe when used properly, but can also be very harmful to the operator and others near the machine if it is not used correctly or for its intended use.

    The Disc/Belt Sander removes wood at a very fast rate, it is easy to use but can also sand off fingertips as well as knukles.

    Always sand on the "Downward" side of the disc

    This is a very safe machine to use but one must be careful to keep your project touching the table at all times.

  • Turn "On" vacuum before starting
  • Turn "Off" vacuum when done
  • The Jig Saw is used to cut out shapes from wood.

  • Always wear safety glasses.

  • Keep your hands and fingers away from the blade
  • Adjust presser foot before using
  • Do not push too hard on the blade when cutting
  • Plan your cut
  • Cut on the scrap side of the line.

  • Wear safety glasses
  • No loose clothing or hair
  • The spindle diameter can be changed to meet your needs
  • Move project in the opposite direction
  • Keep the project touching the table
  • Basic "tools" that we use in the classroom. These should be treated with care and used for thier intended use just like power tools.

  • Never touch the tip
  • Never touch the liquid glue
  • Never peel glue from skin
