Cel shade tutorial |
For this lesson I will teach you how to add a cel shaded look to any image.
1. First I am going to crop the image using the crop tool to bring it to a better size for my purposes (I want to use it as an avatar).
once your image is the right size you will then need to go to the top menu and select Filter>Artistic>Cutout. You will need to play around with the settings until you get the desired effect but without distorting the image out of recognition.
It should turn out something like this. Once you get to this point you need to go to the top menu again and select Layer>Duplicate Layer.
This will create an exact copy of the curent image that is right on top of itself. Aside from seeing a new layer in the Layers toolbar you will notice no difference.
With the newly created layer selected go to the top menu and select Filter>Stylize>Find Edges. This will create the effect shown. Remember that this is not your original image but a copy that is placed over it.
Now all we need to do is mess with the blending options and the opacity. Both of these can be found on the Layers toolbar. CHange the blending mode to Multiply and lower the opacity taste and you will get a result similar to the one displayed
I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial and are able to use it in your own projects to get a nice cel shaded effect.
